Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserves Tuition Fairness Act of 2025
Summary
This legislation proposes to expand tuition protections for members of the Selected Reserve who utilize the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) program. Under the proposal, public educational institutions would be required to offer in-state tuition rates to these service members if they are living in the state where the school is located, even if they are not legal residents of that state.
If enacted, the Department of Veterans Affairs would be directed to disapprove courses at any institution that charges these students higher out-of-state tuition rates. This change aims to lower the out-of-pocket costs for reservists pursuing higher education, ensuring their benefits go further by aligning their tuition costs with those of local residents. This would bring the MGIB-SR program in line with similar residency protections already afforded to veterans using other GI Bill benefits.
