Meat and Poultry Pathogen Reduction and Enforcement Act

The Meat and Poultry Pathogen Reduction and Enforcement Act would grant the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) stronger authority to set and enforce safety standards for bacteria and other pathogens in the nation's meat supply. Under this bill, the USDA would be required to establish specific limits for contaminants in raw meat and poultry and conduct regular testing at processing plants to ensure these standards are met.

For everyday citizens, this legislation aims to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses by ensuring that meat products sold in grocery stores meet strict federal safety benchmarks. If a processing facility fails to meet these microbial standards or follow required sanitation procedures, the government would have the power to stop that facility from labeling its products as "inspected and passed," effectively preventing them from being sold to the public.
