Title II: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Revises the existing tuberculosis research program of the Centers for Disease Control to refocus on issues of latency, drug-resistance, and high-risk populations.
Calls for demonstration projects to include the development of regional capabilities in low incidence areas and collaboration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Mexico, and the United States Agency for International Development.
Revises reporting requirements. Authorizes appropriations for FY 2003 through 2007.
Title III: National Institutes of Health - Authorizes the Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to intensify and coordinate tuberculosis research efforts, including its relationship to HIV.
Authorizes the Director to make Tuberculosis Academic Awards to support clinical curricular programs and Tuberculosis/Pulmonary Infection Awards to support basic biological research as well as new techniques and treatments. Authorizes appropriations for FY 2003 through 2007.
Requires the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of NIH to work to develop a tuberculosis vaccine. Increases funding, authorizing appropriations through FY 2007.
Requires the John E. Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health Sciences to carry out an international training program regarding tuberculosis.
