Pershing County Economic Development and Conservation Act
Summary
S. 1195 would address a longstanding land management challenge in Pershing County, Nevada, where 75 percent of the county is federally owned in a checkerboard pattern of alternating public and private parcels. The bill would authorize the sale or exchange of approximately 356,100 acres of federal land previously identified for disposal by the Bureau of Land Management, allowing the county to work with the federal government to consolidate land holdings and improve management efficiency. Revenue from land sales would remain in Pershing County to fund conservation, recreation, and environmental restoration projects.
The legislation would also designate over 130,000 acres of public lands as protected wilderness areas and transfer land to the Lovelock Paiute Tribe to expand their tribal cemetery. The bill would allow mining companies to purchase surface rights on lands where they already hold mining claims, supporting the mining industry as an economic driver in the county. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and is currently under committee consideration, with hearings held in December 2025.
