Continental Divide National Scenic Trail Completion Act
Summary
The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail Completion Act would require the Department of Agriculture and Department of the Interior to work together to finish the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail no later than 10 years after the bill becomes law. The two agencies would establish a joint team combining the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to coordinate with the trail's administrator and oversee completion efforts. The bill has passed committee review and is eligible for a floor vote in the Senate.
If enacted, this legislation would direct the Department of Agriculture to develop a comprehensive plan for the trail within three years and authorize both agencies to partner with volunteer and nonprofit organizations to help complete and manage the trail. For citizens, this could mean expanded outdoor recreation opportunities across Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, and Wyoming, as the trail would provide a continuous scenic hiking and recreation corridor along the Continental Divide. The bill represents a commitment to finishing a long-distance trail project that spans multiple states and public lands.
