Genomics Data Security Act

The Genomics Data Security Act (S. 1744) aims to protect the genetic information of U.S. citizens by restricting the involvement of certain foreign entities in federally funded research. The bill would prohibit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from providing funding to any company or subsidiary under the control of the Chinese government and would require clinical laboratories with access to U.S. health data to disclose any ties to that government.

For everyday citizens, this legislation is designed to increase the privacy and security of personal DNA and health data by ensuring it is not shared with or managed by foreign adversaries. Additionally, the bill requires the Department of Health and Human Services to update its data-sharing policies to better address modern national security and intellectual property concerns.
