BASIC Act

The Basic Assistance for Students In College (BASIC) Act aims to help college students afford essential living expenses such as food, housing, healthcare, and transportation. The bill would provide federal grants to colleges and universities to help them identify students in need and create programs to provide these basic necessities. Additionally, it requires the Department of Education to coordinate with other federal agencies to automatically notify and enroll eligible students in existing assistance programs like SNAP (food stamps) and Medicaid.
