Hearing Protection Act

The Hearing Protection Act (S. 2050) would remove firearm silencers from the list of restricted items regulated under the National Firearms Act. If passed, citizens would no longer be required to pay a $200 transfer tax, undergo the specialized federal registration process, or endure the lengthy waiting periods currently required to purchase a silencer. Instead, silencers would be regulated like standard long guns, requiring a standard background check for purchase through a licensed dealer while remaining subject to a 10% federal excise tax.
