The Dr. Kate Hendricks Thomas SERVICE Act expands access to breast cancer screenings for veterans who served in locations where they may have been exposed to toxic substances, such as open-air burn pits. Under this law, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) must provide mammography screenings to any veteran who served in specific areas—including Iraq, Afghanistan, and parts of Southwest Asia—regardless of their age or whether they have symptoms. By recognizing toxic exposure as a risk factor, the Act ensures that thousands of veterans who served in modern combat zones can receive preventative care and early detection services for breast cancer.
