Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Land Transfer Act of 2025
Summary
S. 2735 would transfer approximately 265 acres of land in El Dorado County, California into trust for the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians. The bill would revoke a 1964 public land order and place about 80 acres of Bureau of Land Management land, 40 acres of Forest Service land, and 185 acres of tribal-owned land into federal trust status. If enacted, the Secretary of the Interior would have 180 days to complete the transfer.
The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians is a federally recognized tribe located near Placerville in the western Sierra Nevada foothills. The tribe currently has limited land holdings of about 317 acres, and their reservation access was disrupted decades ago when Highway 50 was constructed across their only entrance. The tribe has stated the transferred lands would be used to support housing and essential services for tribal members, as more than 180 tribal families are currently on a housing waitlist.
The bill is currently under consideration by the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, which held hearings on it in December 2025. The Department of Interior has expressed support for the legislation, noting that acquiring land in trust is essential to tribal sovereignty and self-determination.
