Make the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful Act
Summary
This bill would create two main initiatives for Washington D.C. First, it would establish a District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful Commission composed of representatives from federal agencies including the FBI, U.S. Attorneys' Offices, and other law enforcement entities. The commission would recommend actions to address federal immigration law enforcement in D.C., facilitate federal resources to reduce crime, and assist with recruitment and retention of local police officers. Second, the bill would require the Secretary of the Interior to develop a beautification program focused on removing graffiti, restoring federal monuments, and enhancing maintenance of commonly visited areas in the nation's capital. The Secretary would consult with various federal agencies and D.C. officials when establishing this program. The bill would establish a framework to coordinate federal law enforcement and beautification efforts in the District, with the beautification program set to expire in January 2029. This legislation is currently in its early stages and has not yet received committee action.
