American Shores Protection Act of 2025
Summary
S. 3082, the American Shores Protection Act of 2025, would prohibit oil and natural gas exploration, development, and production in specific areas of the outer Continental Shelf off the coasts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. If enacted, the bill would extend a drilling moratorium in these regions through June 30, 2032, and would prevent the Secretary of the Interior from issuing new leases or authorizations for oil and gas activities in the designated areas. The legislation would codify a 2020 executive action and is intended to protect coastal ecosystems and marine resources from potential environmental impacts of offshore drilling.
Proponents argue the bill would safeguard Florida's tourism industry, which generates over $127 billion annually, and protect critical military training zones. The bill is currently under consideration by the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands, Forests, and Mining, which held hearings in February 2026. The measure has not yet been voted on by the full Senate.
