Trade Transparency Unit Strategy Act
Summary
S. 3608, the Trade Transparency Unit Strategy Act, would require the Secretary of Homeland Security, along with the Secretaries of State, Commerce, and Treasury, to develop and submit a comprehensive strategy within 180 days of enactment. Trade Transparency Units are tools used to identify and disrupt international money laundering activities. The strategy would focus on expanding information sharing between U.S. agencies and enhancing cooperation with international partners regarding these units.
Following submission of the strategy, the Comptroller General of the United States would assess its effectiveness within 180 days. The strategy would be submitted in unclassified form, though it may include a classified annex to protect sensitive information. The bill specifies oversight by congressional committees focused on Homeland Security, Foreign Affairs, and Finance. If enacted, this legislation would establish a coordinated government approach to combating money laundering through international trade channels.
