Western South Dakota Water Supply Project Feasibility Study Act
Summary
The Western South Dakota Water Supply Project Feasibility Study Act aims to address long-term water reliability for the Black Hills region and surrounding areas. If enacted, the bill would direct the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a formal study to determine if it is technically and financially possible to transport water from the Missouri River to the Western Dakota Regional Water System. This project would serve municipal, rural, and industrial water needs in a region where water availability is often limited.
The proposal would authorize $10 million for the Bureau of Reclamation to carry out the study in partnership with local water authorities. Under the bill's terms, the federal government would cover no more than 50% of the study's costs. Following the investigation, the Secretary would be required to submit a report to Congress recommending whether the full construction of the water system should be authorized and how much local entities should pay toward those construction costs, which would be at least 25% of the total.
