NIDIS Reauthorization Act of 2026
Summary
S. 3912 would reauthorize the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), a federal program that helps communities prepare for and respond to droughts. NIDIS, originally established in 2006 and previously reauthorized in 2014 and 2019, provides drought monitoring, forecasting, and early warning information through a network of federal agencies, states, tribes, and local partners. The bill would extend the program's authorization and modernize its capabilities.
Under this bill, NIDIS would be directed to incorporate improved forecasting tools, including artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies, to better predict drought conditions. The program would also focus on enhancing seasonal and subseasonal precipitation forecasts, soil moisture monitoring, and low flow water predictions. These improvements would help farmers, water utilities, energy companies, and other decision-makers access better information for planning water use, crop planting, wildfire response, and other drought-related decisions.
The bill represents a continuation of bipartisan efforts to maintain and strengthen the federal government's capacity to provide timely drought warnings and support to vulnerable communities. If enacted, it would ensure continued funding and operation of the U.S. Drought Portal (Drought.gov) and regional drought early warning systems that serve eight regions across the United States.
