RECA Extension Act of 2022

The RECA Extension Act of 2022 extended a federal program that provides financial compensation to individuals who developed serious illnesses after being exposed to radiation from U.S. atomic weapons testing or uranium mining. This extension allowed "downwinders," uranium workers, and certain military veterans to continue filing claims for one-time payments to help cover medical costs and other needs. By moving the program's expiration date, the law ensured that eligible citizens had an additional two years to apply for these benefits before the compensation fund was scheduled to close.
