SECURE Grid Act
Summary
S. 4166, the SECURE Grid Act, would amend federal energy law to strengthen how states prepare for and respond to threats against the electric grid. The bill would require states to include additional considerations in their State Energy Security Plans, specifically addressing risks from extreme weather, cyberattacks targeting local power distribution systems, and threats to the supply chains for critical grid equipment.
For everyday citizens, this bill aims to help prevent power outages and blackouts by ensuring states have comprehensive plans to protect the electrical infrastructure that powers homes, hospitals, businesses, and emergency services. By requiring states to assess vulnerabilities and develop security measures, the legislation seeks to make the power grid more resilient against natural disasters, severe weather events, and cyber threats. This could reduce the frequency and duration of outages that disrupt daily life, affect food storage, medical devices, heating and cooling systems, and business operations.
