My Body, My Data Act of 2022
Summary
The My Body, My Data Act of 2022 aims to strengthen the privacy of personal reproductive and sexual health information by limiting how companies can collect and share this data. Under this bill, apps, websites, and other commercial entities would be prohibited from collecting or sharing information—such as data regarding menstruation, pregnancy, or reproductive surgeries—unless the user provides explicit written consent or the data is strictly necessary to provide a requested service.
For everyday citizens, this legislation would provide the right to access and delete their reproductive health data held by private companies and would require those companies to publish clear privacy policies. The bill is designed to close privacy gaps in non-medical settings, such as period-tracking apps, which are not currently covered by federal health privacy laws like HIPAA. If passed, the Federal Trade Commission and individual citizens would have the power to take legal action against companies that violate these privacy standards.
