Native ELDER Act
Summary
S. 870, the Native ELDER Act (Enhancing Native Elders' Longevity, Dignity, Empowerment, and Respect Act), would modify the Older Americans Act of 1965 to better serve older Native Americans. The bill would establish an advisory committee at the Administration on Aging to provide recommendations on how federal aging programs can improve services for Native American elders. It would also enhance technical assistance and build infrastructure for tribes and tribal organizations so they have greater capacity to deliver services to their communities.
The legislation prioritizes supportive services and in-home modifications to help Native American elders age at home within their own communities. This addresses a significant gap, as the Native American elder population is growing rapidly and currently receives fewer resources compared to other seniors. The bill was introduced in the Senate in March 2025 and is currently under committee review. If enacted, it would require presidential signature to become law.
