Smith River National Recreation Area Expansion Act
Summary
S. 945 would expand the existing Smith River National Recreation Area, which currently protects lands in California, to include the North Fork Smith River watershed in Oregon. The bill would add approximately 58,000 acres of land and designate 74 miles of scenic river segments, including Baldface Creek and Chrome Creek, as wild and scenic rivers. The expansion would permanently withdraw the affected federal lands from new mining claims.
The bill would require the U.S. Forest Service to update the recreation area's management plan to reflect the expansion and to develop specific use and development plans for the newly added areas. Supporters argue the expansion would protect salmon populations, preserve clean drinking water for downstream communities, support fishing and hunting industries, and enhance outdoor recreation opportunities in Southwest Oregon and Northern California. The bill has been reintroduced multiple times over several Congresses and currently has hearings pending before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
