Background

John Barrasso was born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania, where he attended Central Catholic High School. He graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in biology and later earned his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine. After completing his residency at Yale Medical School, he moved to Wyoming and worked as an orthopedic surgeon in private practice and as the chief of staff at the Wyoming Medical Center.

Political career

John Barrasso served in the Wyoming State Senate from 2003 to 2007 before being appointed to the United States Senate following the death of Craig L. Thomas. He has served as a U.S. senator from Wyoming since 2007, winning a special election in 2008 and a full term in 2012. A member of the Republican Party, he became the Senate majority whip in 2025.
