Christopher A. Coons is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Delaware who previously served as the county executive of New Castle County from 2005 to 2010.

Background

Raised in Hockessin, Delaware, Christopher Coons graduated from Amherst College before earning graduate degrees from Yale Divinity School and Yale Law School. His early career included working as a relief worker in Kenya and for the National Coalition for the Homeless in New York, as well as clerking for a federal appeals court judge. Before entering elected office, he spent eight years as in-house counsel for the manufacturing company W.L. Gore & Associates.

Political career

Christopher A. Coons began his career in local government, serving as president of the New Castle County Council from 2001 to 2005 and as the county executive of New Castle County from 2005 to 2010. A member of the Democratic Party, he entered the U.S. Senate after winning a 2010 special election to fill the seat vacated by Joe Biden. He was subsequently elected to a full term in 2014 and became Delaware's senior senator in January 2025.
