About
Richard J. Durbin is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Illinois who has served since 1997 and is the longest-serving Senate party whip in U.S. history.
Background
Richard J. Durbin was born in East St. Louis, Illinois, and earned both his bachelor's degree from the School of Foreign Service and his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. Before his election to Congress, he practiced law in Springfield, served as legal counsel for the Illinois State Senate Judiciary Committee, and worked as an adjunct professor at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He also gained business experience as the co-owner of a local pub and held various legal roles in state government throughout the 1970s.
Political career
Before entering federal office, Richard J. Durbin served as legal counsel to the Illinois Lieutenant Governor and the Illinois State Senate Judiciary Committee, and he was an unsuccessful candidate for the state senate and lieutenant governorship. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, where he represented Illinois's 20th congressional district for seven terms. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996 and has served as a senator since 1997.
