Background

John W. Hickenlooper was born in Narberth, Pennsylvania, and earned both a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in geology from Wesleyan University. He began his career as a petroleum geologist in Colorado before co-founding the Wynkoop Brewing Company, one of the first brewpubs in the United States, in 1988. Before entering the U.S. Senate, he served as the mayor of Denver and the governor of Colorado.

John Hickenlooper began his political career as the mayor of Denver, serving two terms from 2003 to 2011, before being elected as the 42nd governor of Colorado. After serving two terms as governor from 2011 to 2019, he briefly sought the Democratic nomination for U.S. president. He was first sworn into the U.S. Senate in 2021 after winning the general election to represent Colorado as a member of the Democratic Party.
