Angus S. King, Jr. is an Independent Senator from Maine who previously served as the state's 72nd governor from 1995 to 2003.
Background
Angus King was born and raised in Virginia before moving to Maine after graduating from law school. He worked as a lawyer and later founded Northeast Energy Management, Inc. in 1989, a company focused on developing and operating electrical energy conservation projects. Before his election to the U.S. Senate, he served two terms as the governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003.
Political career
Angus King began his political career as the 72nd governor of Maine, serving two terms from 1995 to 2003. He was first sworn in as a U.S. senator in 2013 after winning the 2012 election to succeed retiring Senator Olympia Snowe. A political independent, he has been reelected twice and chooses to caucus with the Democratic Party for committee assignment purposes.
