Background

Tim Kaine was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and grew up in Overland Park, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Missouri and earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School before working as a law clerk and practicing law in Richmond for 17 years, where he specialized in fair housing. In addition to his legal practice, he served as an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond School of Law for six years.

Political career

Tim Kaine began his public service career on the Richmond City Council in 1994 and later served as the mayor of Richmond, the lieutenant governor of Virginia, and the 70th governor of Virginia. A member of the Democratic Party, he also chaired the Democratic National Committee and was his party's nominee for Vice President of the United States in 2016.
