Background

John Kennedy was born in Centreville, Mississippi, and raised in Zachary, Louisiana. He graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University before earning a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and an advanced law degree with first class honours from Oxford University. Before entering politics, he worked as a partner at a law firm and later served as an adjunct professor at the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

Political career

John Kennedy began his political career in Louisiana as special counsel and a cabinet member to Governor Buddy Roemer before serving as Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue and later as the state treasurer from 2000 to 2017. Originally a member of the Democratic Party, he switched his affiliation to the Republican Party in 2007.
