About
Andy Kim is a Democratic U.S. Senator from New Jersey and a former diplomat who became the first Korean-American in the Senate and the first Asian-American U.S. senator from New Jersey.
Background
Born in Boston and raised in South Jersey, Andy Kim graduated from the University of Chicago before earning a doctorate in international relations from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He began his career as a civilian advisor at the U.S. State Department, serving in Afghanistan under generals David Petraeus and John R. Allen. He later worked as a national security official for the Obama administration, where he helped develop the strategy to counter ISIS.
Political career
Before entering elective office, Andy Kim served as a civilian advisor at the U.S. State Department in Afghanistan and as a national security official during the Obama administration. He was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2019, representing New Jersey's 3rd congressional district until 2024. In 2024, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, where he became the first Korean-American to serve in the chamber and the first Asian-American senator from New Jersey.
