Luján, Ben Ray

Ben Ray Luján represents New Mexico in the U.S. Senate as a junior senator since 2021. As ranking member of the Food and Nutrition, Specialty Crops, Organics, and Research Subcommittee within the Senate Agriculture Committee, and the Telecommunications and Media Subcommittee within the Senate Commerce Committee, Luján leads Democratic opposition on these panels. Ranking members shape committee priorities, question witnesses during hearings, and advance alternative legislation—roles that give Luján significant influence over agricultural policy, food security, and telecommunications regulation.

Luján brings substantial experience in energy and utility regulation to his committee work. Before his Senate election, he served on the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission from 2005 to 2008, where he chaired the body and championed renewable energy standards, requiring utilities to source 20 percent of energy from renewables and diversify into solar, wind, and biomass. He also collaborated with western state regulators on climate change solutions. This background in energy policy and regulatory oversight informs his current work on agricultural infrastructure and technology issues.

Luján's legislative career reflects a progressive Democratic orientation. He previously served in the House representing New Mexico's 3rd district from 2009 to 2021, where he rose to assistant speaker—the highest-ranking Hispanic position in Congress at that time. In 2014, he chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and led Democrats to a House majority in 2018, becoming the first Hispanic to hold that role. His current sponsored bills address agricultural worker protections, food system transparency, and immigration enforcement reform, demonstrating his focus on rural and border-state concerns alongside progressive priorities.
