James Lankford is a Republican U.S. Senator from Oklahoma and an ordained Southern Baptist minister who has served in the Senate since 2015.
Background
James Lankford was born on March 4, 1968. An ordained Southern Baptist minister, he spent much of his professional career leading religious youth programs. From 1996 to 2009, he served as the president of the Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center, a youth camp run by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma.
Political career
James Lankford, a Republican, began his congressional service in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represented Oklahoma's 5th district from 2011 to 2015. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in a 2014 special election and was sworn into office on January 6, 2015. He has since been reelected to the Senate in 2016 and 2022, becoming the senior senator from Oklahoma in 2023.
