Murphy, Christopher

Christopher Murphy is a Democratic Senator from Connecticut who has served in the chamber since 2013. Before his election to the Senate, he represented Connecticut's 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for three terms and served eight years in the Connecticut General Assembly. A graduate of Williams College and the University of Connecticut School of Law, he practiced real estate and banking law before entering public service. In the state legislature, he was known for authoring a landmark workplace smoking ban and supporting stem cell research.

In the Senate, Murphy holds several influential committee assignments, including positions on the Committee on Appropriations, the Committee on Foreign Relations, and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. He serves as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Department of Homeland Security and the Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation. His policy work frequently centers on gun control advocacy, particularly following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, as well as mental health reform and international diplomacy.

Murphy has sponsored a wide range of legislation, including the Take Back Our Hospitals Act of 2026 and the Patient Safety and Whistleblower Protections Act. He is a vocal supporter of the Affordable Care Act and has championed the Buy American initiative to encourage federal spending on domestic goods. Additionally, he has led bipartisan efforts to reform the nation's mental health system and has been an outspoken advocate for human rights and diplomatic engagement in U.S. foreign policy.
