About
Markwayne Mullin is a Republican U.S. Senator from Oklahoma who was first sworn into the chamber on January 3, 2023. Born in 1977, he is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and previously served five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Oklahoma's 2nd District from 2013 to 2023. Before entering public service, he was a businessman and rancher, notably taking over his family’s plumbing company at age 20 and expanding it into a large regional enterprise. He holds an associate degree in construction technology from the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology and is also known for his background as a former undefeated mixed martial arts fighter.
In the Senate, Mullin’s legislative focus frequently centers on Tribal sovereignty, small business advocacy, and public safety. He has sponsored 55 bills, including the Mikaela Naylon Give Kids a Chance Act of 2025 and the Small Businesses before Bureaucrats Act, as well as legislation to authorize Tribal meat inspection and allow Tribal government identification for federal law enforcement purposes. His committee work includes assignments on the Senate Committees on Armed Services, Appropriations, Indian Affairs, and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). Within these committees, he has held leadership roles as the Chair of the HELP Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety and the Appropriations Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch. In March 2026, he was nominated to serve as the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.
