Shaheen, Jeanne

Jeanne Shaheen is a veteran legislator and the first woman in American history to be elected as both a governor and a U.S. senator. Representing New Hampshire, she first entered the Senate in 2009 after serving three terms as the state's governor from 1997 to 2003. Her professional background includes experience as a high school teacher and a small business owner, as well as serving as the director of Harvard University's Institute of Politics.

In the Senate, Shaheen holds influential roles on several key committees. She serves as a senior member of the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Armed Services, and she is the Ranking Member of the Committee on Foreign Relations. Her legislative work frequently focuses on national security, veterans' affairs, and small business support. She has been a prominent advocate for addressing the opioid crisis and has sponsored significant legislation such as the INSULIN Act of 2026 and the BLOCK PUTIN Act.

Throughout her tenure, Shaheen has established a reputation for bipartisan cooperation on issues ranging from energy efficiency to infrastructure. She was a lead negotiator for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and has consistently worked to expand healthcare access for Granite Staters. In March 2025, she announced that she would not seek reelection in 2026, concluding a long career in New Hampshire and national politics.
