Investigations and Oversight

The Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee is a specialized investigative panel within the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Unlike most subcommittees that focus on specific policy areas, this subcommittee holds broad investigative authority across all matters within the parent committee's jurisdiction, which covers federal agencies including NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.\n\nThe subcommittee examines issues spanning the full scope of federal science and technology policy. Recent hearings have focused on research security, including implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act and national security protocols for protecting federally funded research from foreign adversaries. The subcommittee has also held hearings on data center infrastructure needs for artificial intelligence development and threats to U.S. funded research.\n\nChaired by Representative Richard McCormick (R-GA), with Ranking Member Emilia Sykes (D-OH), the subcommittee serves as an investigative arm of the parent committee. While the full committee must report legislation to the House floor, this subcommittee prepares the ground by conducting hearings, gathering evidence, and examining implementation of existing laws across the federal research enterprise.
