Alma Adams is a Democratic Representative from North Carolina's 12th district who previously served as a college professor and is known for her distinctive hats.
Background
Alma Adams earned her Ph.D. in art education and multicultural education from Ohio State University in 1981. Before entering politics, she worked as an art professor and college administrator, serving on the faculty of Bennett College and directing the Steel Hall Art Gallery. She also co-founded the African American Atelier in 1990 to promote appreciation for African American visual arts and culture.
Political career
Alma Adams began her political career in the North Carolina General Assembly, where she represented the 58th House district from 1994 until 2014. She entered the U.S. House of Representatives after winning a 2014 special election to fill a vacancy in North Carolina's 12th congressional district, while simultaneously winning election to a full two-year term. Upon her arrival in Congress, she was recognized as the 100th woman serving in the 113th Congress.
