The House Committee on Agriculture has broad jurisdiction over federal agriculture policy and related federal agencies. The committee reviews bills on farm commodities, crop insurance, rural development, forestry, water conservation, and nutrition assistance programs like SNAP (food stamps). Chairman Glenn Thompson, a Republican from Pennsylvania, leads the 53-member committee, with Ranking Member Angie Craig, a Democrat from Minnesota, representing the minority party. The committee's most significant recent activity was advancing the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 on March 5 with a 34-17 vote. This comprehensive farm bill, which spans over 800 pages, addresses crop insurance, disaster assistance, rural infrastructure, conservation, and nutrition programs. The markup process lasted over 20 hours and included debate over controversial provisions on pesticide regulation and livestock production standards. The bill now moves to the full House for consideration before going to the Senate.
