Thanedar, Shri

Shri Thanedar represents Michigan's 13th Congressional District, which includes much of Detroit and surrounding Wayne County communities. He first entered Congress in January 2023 after serving a term in the Michigan House of Representatives. Born in India, he immigrated to the United States in 1979 and built a successful career as a chemist and entrepreneur, founding several pharmaceutical and chemical research companies before entering public service. He holds a PhD in chemistry and an MBA, and his professional background as a scientist and business owner informs much of his legislative work.

In the House, he serves on the Committee on Homeland Security, where he is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability. He also holds a seat on the Committee on Agriculture. His policy priorities center on economic justice, including advocating for a higher minimum wage, universal healthcare, and increased funding for public education. He has sponsored legislation such as the Middle Class Tax Cut Act and the Digital Literacy and Equity Act, reflecting his commitment to reducing the racial wealth gap and expanding technological access for his constituents.
