About
Mark Messmer represents Indiana's 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, having taken office on January 3, 2025. Born in September 1962, Messmer is a lifelong Indiana resident from Jasper who brings extensive state legislative experience to Congress. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University in 1985 and worked as an engineer for companies including Dow Chemical and John Brown Engineering before becoming a co-owner of Messmer Mechanical Inc., a mechanical contracting business.
Messmer's path to Congress followed a long career in Indiana state politics. He served in the Indiana House of Representatives for three terms representing the 63rd district from 2008 to 2014, then moved to the Indiana Senate where he represented the 48th district for ten years from 2014 to 2024. During his Senate tenure, he served as majority leader from 2018 to 2022. He also previously served on the Holy Family School Board from 2001 to 2004, including as board president.
In Congress, Messmer serves on three major committees: Agriculture, Armed Services, and Education and Workforce. Within these committees, he holds memberships on several subcommittees including Commodity Markets and Digital Assets; Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry; Conservation, Research, and Biotechnology; Readiness; Strategic Forces; and Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education. His legislative focus reflects his district's needs, with recent bills addressing child care fraud prevention, defense and agriculture research collaboration, food assistance programs, and environmental conservation. These priorities align with his background in engineering and his representation of southwest Indiana's agricultural and manufacturing communities.
