Shomari Coleman Figures represents Alabama's 2nd congressional district in the House, having been elected in 2024. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Figures comes from a family with deep roots in civil rights and public service. His father, Michael Figures, was a civil rights attorney and Alabama state senator, and his mother, Vivian Davis Figures, succeeded her husband in the state senate. Figures earned a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and history from the University of Alabama in 2006 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2010. Following law school, he worked as a law clerk in the Eastern District of Missouri.
Figures brings substantial experience in federal government and politics to his role. He worked as a field organizer for President Obama's 2012 reelection campaign in Ohio, then served in the Obama administration as domestic director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and as White House liaison to Attorney General Loretta Lynch. He later became legislative counsel for U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and contributed to President Biden's transition team. Most recently, he served as deputy chief of staff to Attorney General Merrick Garland until his resignation in October 2023.
In Congress, Figures serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. His committee assignments include work on commodity markets, digital assets, rural development, nutrition and foreign agriculture, economic development, public buildings, emergency management, highways and transit, and water resources and environment. His legislative priorities reflect his district's needs and his background, with sponsored bills addressing food and nutrition programs, rural development, bus operator safety, and estuaries protection.
