Jahana Hayes is a Democratic Representative from Connecticut's 5th District who was recognized as the National Teacher of the Year in 2016 and is the first Black woman to represent her state.
Background
Jahana Hayes was born on March 8, 1973. Before entering public office, she worked at the Southbury Training School and later taught history and government at John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury, Connecticut. Her career in education earned her several honors, including being named the 2016 National Teacher of the Year.
Political career
Before entering public office, Jahana Hayes worked as a teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury and was recognized as the 2016 National Teacher of the Year. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2019 to represent Connecticut's 5th congressional district. She is the first Black woman elected to represent the state of Connecticut in Congress.
