About
Michael McCaul is a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas's 10th Congressional District, which stretches from the Austin area to the Houston suburbs. He has served in Congress since 2005, making him one of the longest-serving members of the Texas delegation. Before entering politics, McCaul worked as an attorney and federal prosecutor, serving as Chief of Counterterrorism and National Security for the U.S. Attorney's office in Texas and as Deputy Attorney General of Texas from 1998 to 2002.
McCaul has held prominent committee leadership positions focused on national security. He chaired the House Committee on Homeland Security from 2013 to 2019 and became the first Texan to chair the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in 2023, a position he held through 2024. He currently serves as chairman emeritus of both committees. His legislative work emphasizes cybersecurity, counterterrorism, border security, and support for U.S. allies. He has been a vocal advocate for Ukraine, supporting military aid and weapons transfers, and has taken a strong stance against China's policies.
McCaul has sponsored 82 bills during his tenure, including measures on sanctions, cybersecurity, and international issues. He founded the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus and co-chairs the Congressional High Tech Caucus and Congressional Semiconductor Caucus. In September 2025, McCaul announced he would not seek re-election in 2026, ending his tenure in Congress.
