Nehls, Troy E.

Troy Nehls is a Republican U.S. Representative for Texas's 22nd Congressional District, which includes parts of Fort Bend, Brazoria, and Harris counties. First elected in 2020 and assuming office on January 3, 2021, he brought a background of nearly 30 years in law enforcement and 21 years of military service to Congress. Before his tenure in the House, he served as the Sheriff of Fort Bend County from 2013 to 2021 and previously as a constable. A retired Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, he completed combat tours in Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, earning two Bronze Star medals.

In the House, Nehls holds significant roles on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, where he serves as Chair of the Subcommittee on Aviation. He is also a member of the Committee on the Judiciary, contributing to subcommittees focused on crime, surveillance, and immigration. His legislative work often reflects his professional background, including sponsorship of the Railroad Safety Enhancement Act of 2026 and the CODIS Access Modernization Act. He has also been active in aviation policy through the Supersonic Aviation Modernization Act and updates to FAA certification processes.

Nehls is known for his conservative policy focus, particularly regarding border security, fiscal responsibility, and support for law enforcement. He was a member of the Select Subcommittee to Investigate the Remaining Questions Surrounding January 6, 2021. Throughout his terms, he has advocated for veteran health care and the protection of Texas's energy sector. In late 2025, he announced that he would not seek reelection in 2026, intending to conclude his congressional service at the end of his third term in January 2027.
