Scholten, Hillary J.

Hillary Scholten is the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 3rd Congressional District, which includes Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Grand Haven. First elected in 2022 and sworn into office in January 2023, she is the first woman to represent the district and the first Democrat to hold the seat in several decades. Before her time in Congress, Scholten worked as a social worker focused on housing advocacy and later as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice under the Obama administration. She also served as a staff attorney at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, where she specialized in immigration law and civil rights.

In the House, Scholten serves on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Small Business. Her legislative priorities often focus on regional infrastructure, water protection, and economic development. She has sponsored several bills, including the Roadway Resiliency Act and the Local Water Protection Act, reflecting her focus on environmental and community safety. Additionally, she holds a leadership role as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Workforce Development, where she advocates for small business growth and labor protections.
