LOCAL Act
Summary
The LOCAL Act (Local Opportunities, Conservation, and American Lands Act) would permanently establish the Bureau of Land Management's headquarters in Grand Junction, Colorado. The bill would ensure that all BLM employees currently stationed in Grand Junction remain there and would require the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a study within one year to evaluate whether relocating additional BLM employee positions to Grand Junction or other western states would improve federal land management, increase coordination with local communities, and strengthen tourism, conservation, outdoor recreation, grazing, and energy production.
The bill's supporters argue that having the BLM headquarters located in the West, closer to the federal lands it manages, would improve efficiency and decision-making. The BLM headquarters was previously moved to Grand Junction during the Trump administration but was relocated back to Washington, D.C. under the Biden administration. If enacted, this bill would reverse that decision and make the western location permanent.
