I CAN Act

The I CAN Act would expand the role of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinical nurse specialists in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Specifically, the bill would allow these healthcare providers to document medical necessity for diabetic shoes, supervise cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs, and certify the need for inpatient hospital services. Currently, these functions are restricted to physicians.

If enacted, the bill could increase access to healthcare services for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries by allowing a broader range of qualified healthcare providers to deliver care. This may be particularly beneficial in areas with physician shortages. The bill is currently in committee and has not yet been voted on by the full House of Representatives.
