ITS Codification Act

The ITS Codification Act would provide statutory authority for the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences, a research and engineering organization within the National Telecommunications and Information Administration that focuses on telecommunications issues. Currently, ITS operates without explicit legislative authorization, and this bill would codify its existence and mission into law.

Beyond establishing ITS's legal foundation, the bill would direct the institute to create a new initiative focused on developing emergency communication and tracking technologies. These technologies would be designed to help locate and communicate with individuals trapped in confined spaces such as underground mines, where standard radio communication systems often fail or perform poorly.
