To amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to expand practitioners eligible to furnish telehealth services under the Medicare program.
Summary
H.R. 1614 would amend Medicare law to expand which healthcare practitioners can deliver telehealth services to Medicare beneficiaries. Currently, telehealth services under Medicare are limited to certain providers. This bill would permanently authorize audiologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists to furnish telehealth services, allowing these specialists to treat patients remotely rather than requiring in-person visits.
If enacted, this bill could improve access to care for Medicare beneficiaries, particularly those in rural areas or with mobility limitations who may find it difficult to travel for appointments. Patients could receive hearing evaluations, physical rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and speech therapy services from home. The bill is currently in the House and has been referred to committee for consideration, but has not yet been voted on by the full chamber.
