Small Business Artificial Intelligence Advancement Act

The Small Business Artificial Intelligence Advancement Act would require the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to create or identify resources specifically designed to help small businesses address concerns related to artificial intelligence use. These resources would need to be broadly applicable across different technologies, neutral regarding specific AI platforms, and based on established international standards. NIST would coordinate with the Small Business Administration to distribute these resources to small business owners and operators.

The bill would also require NIST to regularly review and update these resources at least every two years to keep pace with rapid developments in AI technology. This ongoing maintenance would help ensure that small businesses have access to current guidance as AI tools and best practices evolve.

Practically, if enacted, small business owners would gain access to standardized guidance on how to safely and effectively implement AI in their operations. This could help smaller companies address cybersecurity risks, protect customer data, and understand how to responsibly adopt AI technologies that larger corporations may already be using. The bill has passed the House and is currently under review by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
