REMOVE Act
Summary
H.R. 4711, the REMOVE Act, would amend immigration law to accelerate deportation proceedings. Specifically, the bill would require the Attorney General to commence removal proceedings as promptly as possible after Immigration and Customs Enforcement files a Notice to Appear with the immigration court. For individuals convicted of deportable offenses, proceedings would need to commence as expeditiously as possible after conviction. Most significantly, the bill would mandate that all immigration court proceedings be completed within 15 days of commencement, a substantial reduction from current timelines.
If enacted, this bill would substantially speed up the removal process for individuals subject to deportation. The practical effect would be faster deportations for those ordered removed, particularly those with criminal convictions. The bill has passed committee review and is now eligible for a floor vote in the House. However, it has not yet become law and would require passage by both chambers of Congress and presidential signature to take effect.
