BLUE Pacific Act

The BLUE Pacific Act would direct the U.S. government to expand engagement with Pacific Island countries including Fiji, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and the Cook Islands. The bill would authorize various assistance programs focused on public health, education, workforce development, cybersecurity, broadband infrastructure, sustainable fisheries, and disaster preparedness in these nations.

If enacted, the bill would require the State Department to help Pacific Island countries access development financing from international organizations, direct the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to prioritize investment agreements with these nations, and expand the Commerce Department's commercial presence in the region. The President would also gain authority to extend certain diplomatic privileges to the Pacific Islands Forum, a regional organization of 18 Pacific countries.

The practical effect would be increased U.S. investment in development projects, infrastructure, and security cooperation across the Pacific region. Currently, the bill has been introduced in the House and referred to committee for consideration, but has not yet been voted on by the full chamber.
